Secret Mountains – Shaking Through

No tech video this time, boo.

Ava Luna – Shaking Through

The latest Weathervane episode features Brooklyn’s Ava Luna, curated by Twin Sister.  Usually on these episodes I’m engineer and mixer as there’s a separate producer, but this time I took on all of those roles.  Things started out a bit dicey on “Water Duct” but damn, I love how it turned out.

Cat Martino – Shaking Through (feat. Sufjan Stevens and Chris Powell)

Awesome song and sounds.  It was also just featured on NPR’s All Song Considered.  As usual, the raw tracks, stems, track sheet and Chris Powell’s (Man Man) drum samples can be downloaded here.

Strand of Oaks – Shaking Through

A new Shaking Through episode was released on Tuesday featuring Timothy Showalter’s Strand of Oaks.  Chris Ward of Pattern is Movement curated the episode and played some of the biggest sounded drums I’ve ever heard (I threw a healthy amount of gated reverb flange on them too).  Eliza Jones from Buried Beds played pretty much everything else.  Seriously a Philly supergroup, this one turned out amazing.

Shaking Through: Snowmine

We got in some really amazing gear on this session: AEA ribbon mics, RETRO limiters and EQ’s and a pair of Telefunken C12′s.  The result is totally stunning.  Check out the tech feature for info on that and some really unique effects we came up with!

Help Us Make Shaking Through Volume 3 Awesome(r)

Volume 2 of Shaking Through just wrapped up with the Snowmine episode breaking all sorts of records for us.  Only a week after its release, the video already has over 27,000 views!  The episodes from the past year are some of the best yet and now we’re looking to try new things and keep getting better for 2012.  This is where Kickstarter comes in.  Each one of these episodes is a lot of work, more than you might imagine.  There’s a large crew of people that contribute to each episode, from camera operators, sound guys, editors to engineers (me!).  Even with as much time and love everyone puts in to each of these episodes, this fundraiser will help make sure that we can continue to get even better at telling and sharing these stories.

With each episode, there’s a technical profile that showcases the production side of the song and how we got things to sound like they do, like this one from Family Band:

Along with that are all of the raw unmixed tracks with a detailed track sheet and mix stems for each song, which can be found here.  One of the new reward levels of the Kickstarter is spending 4 hours with me at Miner Street to deconstruct and remix a Shaking Through song of your choice.  Link!  I’ll help you go through the tracks and make a mix of your own using all of the high end analog gear at the studio.  It’s like a date with me, only because it’s probably where I’d end up taking you anyway.

Shaking Through: Hezekiah Jones

April’s Shaking Through release is an episode featuring Hezekiah Jones.  Their song, “Borrowed Heart” was written to sync with a scene from the film Bride of Frankenstein. I had worked with these guys a few years ago, recording a cover of Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” for a compilation (don’t even get me started on that comp) and had an amazing time. This time would be no different, as it was a huge collaborative effort between some extremely talented people that just kept on getting more awesome as the day went on.

Shaking Through: Port St. Willow

A new episode of the Shaking Through series was released yesterday featuring Port St. Willow from Portland, Oregon.  I had a ton of fun tracking and and mixing this song. The drum parts and their sounds are really unique, the guitars push their boundaries into synth territory and the vocals are just plain huge. The video was beautifully shot along the Wissahickon Creek in the autumn and is the perfect backdrop for the song.  It is also one of the last documented appearances of my glorious mustache.

That’s me playing that janky beat in the intro!

Shaking Through: A Classic Education

The first Shaking Through episode of 2011 features an awesome band from Bologna, Italy, A Classic Education. We recorded this episode back in October.
